I never expected ugly potatoes to change everything.
Back in 2022, we posted on social media about giving out free Ugly Potatoes—and waited. 12 people had come. No big deal. Two weeks later, we tried again. 75 people showed up. Then 200. Then 800.
By the end of the year, we had 2,000 people lining up down the road to grab bags of misfit potatoes, carrots, and squash. It was chaos—in the best way possible!
It got so busy we had to move the event off the farm, the road was getting shut down by the cops. But hey that’s how you know it’s a good party, right? And that’s when we realized it was something bigger.
Watch the the cops story. 😂
Why this matters to us
Our farm has been around for 105 years. It has survived world wars, depressions, and market crashes, but one thing has stayed the same: we help our neighbours.
As farmers, we see how much good food goes to waste because it’s ugly or doesn’t meet grocery store standards. We also know that 1 in 5 people in our community struggles with food insecurity. It just doesn’t sit right with us.
So, instead of tossing that food, we give it away.
For me, Ugly Potato Day has become one of the most meaningful things we do. I’ve grown up around potatoes—but it wasn’t until we started giving them away that I found deep purpose in what we grow.
Now, we even have our own Ugly Potato Hoodie, where every purchase provides 10 servings of food, and we’re constantly finding new ways to fight food insecurity.
What’s happening this year
We’ve got three Ugly Potato Day events planned for 2025:
🥔 August 9th – Our main event is open to the public!
🥔 July (date TBA) – Open to Newsletter Subscribers-only.
🥔 October (date TBA) – Open to Newsletter Subscribers-only.
These two events are going back to our roots. Smaller events, right on the farm, with a capacity of 3,000 people max. And it is only available to newsletter subscribers.
